Strengthen, Do Not Rescue

Help has to be judged by where it leads. This chapter distinguishes immediate stabilization from the longer work of building another person's capacity to make decisions and carry responsibility.

Emergency intervention has a place. So does patience with honest struggle, slow progress, and repeated attempts to rebuild. The chapter does not treat needing help as refusal. It questions support that continually removes consequences while leaving a destructive pattern protected.

It also examines the helper's motives. Being needed can become an identity, and guidance can turn into control. Clear boundaries, truthful feedback without contempt, and support for the next responsible action keep help directed toward agency. The aim is for another person to grow stronger, not for the helper to become indispensable.
